JIBC law enforcement degree a vital stepping stone for a meaningful career

The Bachelor of Law Enforcement Studies (BLES) program has served as a rewarding stepping stone to meaningful careers in public safety.

Ramandeep Randhawa is a fourth-year BLES student at the JIBC New Westminster Campus, who currently serves as a Bylaw Enforcement Officer for the City of North Vancouver and the City of New Westminster. He has also been hired by the Vancouver Police Department as a Special Municipal Constable.

“I’m extremely satisfied to have continued my education and pursue a bachelor’s degree,” said Ramandeep, who began his post-secondary education at JIBC by completing the Law Enforcement Studies Diploma. read more »

Law Enforcement Studies student helps women living in the Downtown Eastside

A mother of two young children who lost her husband unexpectedly last December, Megan L’Heureux decided earlier this year to embark on a new career path in public safety by completing JIBC’s Law Enforcement Studies Diploma (LESD) program.

Her first semester in the program has proven to be an eye-opening experience. For example, in the Introduction to the Canadian Criminal Justice System course (LAWS-1202), students have an opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge about some of the situations and challenges public safety professionals deal with. In October, Megan’s class went to Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside with their instructor, Chris Thomson, to visit the provincial courthouse and InSite, North America’s first legal supervised injection site operated by Vancouver Coastal Health.

While she had been aware of the poverty and all the issues facing residents in the Downtown Eastside, spending time in the neighbourhood “stirred up a lot of positive energy in me,” and she spent the next few days looking for different ways to try and help people in the neighbourhood. read more »

JIBC Law Enforcement Studies program contributes to the success of a new BC Sheriff recruit

Ever since Jenelle completed the RCMP Youth Academy when she was in high school, she knew she wanted to pursue a career in law enforcement.

“It was definitely an intense experience, however, I have to admit that by the end of the program, I had become infatuated with the intensity, discipline, sense of teamwork, and overall feeling of accomplishment when it was all said and done,” she said. “After that experience, I knew that law enforcement was something I definitely wanted to be a part of.”
